When do you walk?
Usually on the third Saturday of each month (except December, which is usually a week earlier). Occasionally there are also walks on other Saturdays. For day walks we meet at 10.15 for a 10.30am start and normally finish at about 4pm.
How many people attend?
This varies but is typically from 10 to 20.
How far do you walk?
Most walks are around 10 miles. Some are ‘figure-of-eight’ walks, which return to the starting point for lunch so one can walk just the morning or afternoon. We sometimes have half-day walks and special interest walks. Winter walks are usually under 10 miles. Summer walks tend to be a little longer.
Where do you walk?
Anywhere in Kent and Sussex, though we also stray into Surrey and London. The majority of our walks tend to be towards the centre of this area, because that is where most of our members live.
How are details of walks communicated?
Details are emailed to members one or two weeks ahead of the walk date. These include directions, length, where to park, etc.
How difficult are the walks?
Most of our walks are fairly easy but some include steep hills. Country walking also means there are often stiles, mud, animals, etc. The walk details normally mention any known difficulties.
What else do you do besides walking?
Occasionally there is tea or a meal after a walk for those who wish it. We have also had half-day history walks (usually in London). Some walks include a visit to a garden, place of interest, bird hide etc. and we like to make time to enjoy the natural world around us.
What about food and drink?
We usually have a picnic lunch and drink stops mid-morning and afternoon. It is important to bring sufficient liquid – especially in hot weather. A pub or café lunch is sometimes a possibility but time is usually too short for a full pub meal. A teashop or pub may be an option after a walk.
Will there be toilet facilities?
Sometimes. It’s not always possible to plan walks to include toilets, necessitating the use of bushes en route. Information is provided in the walk details.
Is special equipment required?
Suitable footwear is essential. For most of the year this means waterproof boots, as there may be mud and puddles even in summer. Other items include:
Waterproofs. Some people carry and umbrella too.
Warm clothing in cold weather, together with an extra layer.
A wide brimmed hat and other sun protection are advisable for most of the year – even on cloudy days.
A rucksack or waist pack to carry food, liquid and clothing. Make sure your water-bottle doesn’t leak.
Walking poles can be useful for hills and for uneven or muddy ground.
Do I need to be a Christian to walk with you?
No, we welcome anyone on our walks. Most of our members are practicing Christians and we start with a short prayer to commit the day to God.
Do I need to be a member to walk with you?
No, but membership enables you to receive full details of each walk for just £2 a year. If you want to come and try one or two walks before joining, you can request details shortly beforehand using our Contact form.
Can children come on your walks?
Yes, we welcome under-18s provided they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who takes full responsibility for their safety and wellbeing.
Do I need to inform you if I plan to come on one of your walks?
We do not normally need confirmation of attendance unless you plan to attend a post-walk event.
Could a photo of me appear on your website?
Yes, but not if you tell the walk leader that you don't want that to happen.
Do you walk in bad weather?
Yes, unless the weather is bad enough to make walking hazardous. We recommend that walkers contact the walk leader before setting off if severe weather warnings have been issued.
Do I need a car to come on your walks?
Many of our walks are only accessible by car but we may be able to arrange a lift from a station or another mutually convenient place if you contact us early enough.
Are dogs allowed on your walks?
We do not encourage dogs on any walk where there may be cattle (e.g. farmland). Cattle may become aggressive or frightened at the presence of a dog. Where cattle are not anticipated, walk leaders may permit dogs but will usually ask that you keep the dog on a lead.
